Hong Kong food guide + travel tips

This time last year, Brenda and I flew to Hong Kong for our first #brenna holiday outside of Australia. I used to go to Hong Kong a lot when I was much younger as my parents had family friends living there. To be honest, it's really not my ideal holiday destination - perhaps because I've been there so many times the novelty has since worn off or perhaps because I find it much too similar to Singapore in terms of the lifestyle pace and metropolitan vibe (probably why I didn't enjoy Sydney too much either!)

Nonetheless! Because Brenda isn't exactly the planning sort, I, as usual decided to take matters into my own hand. This meant printing and preparing all the necessary bookings and documents as well as doing all the research for the places we wanted to go and food we wanted to eat.

I've been to all of Hong Kong's big landmarks already so I was admittedly more interested in the food this time around. After spending a few nights reading numerous travel guides and reviews, I came up with this pretty extensive (but not exhaustive) list of food places I wanted to try. I honestly quite proud of it hahaha and Brenda has been telling me to post it up and share it with others for a while. So I figured, why not?

So here you have it: My Hong Kong food guide/list

Places that have been recommended the most are at the top along with the nearest MTR station, address for easy GPS navigation, rough directions, opening hours and what they're famous for.

There were some places that didn't make it list, simply because I wasn't too interested it in. Also, because Brenda came down with food poisoning on the first day of our HK leg, we didn't manage to cover everything so I can't vouch for the quality of all the places I mention.

I find it pretty handy to print the full list out and carry it around with you because whenever you're bored of shopping or decide to switch your itinerary around a little (perks of going free and easy!) - all you have to do is take out this list and find the closest restaurant/cafe to you by MTR. This also made things pretty easy for us in planning out our day. For instance, we would visit all the places in Central for the first half of the day before moving on to another location.

We didn't spend ALL our days eating in Hong Kong and since I'm already at it - let me share a little bit of our itinerary and some travel tips with you! We did the usual shopping in Mongkok and walk down the Avenue of Stars (I wasn't impressed... with both of them). We spent one full day in Ocean Park, half a day visiting the Tian Tan buddha at Lantau island and 2 days and 1 night shopping in ShenZhen (best decision ever!)

Travel Tips + Rough Itinerary

Ocean Park

In my opinion, Ocean Park is better suited for younger kids. I only really enjoyed the Hair Raiser rollercoaster and the cable car up to the top. I found all the other rides very mild but hey, it's worth a visit if you've never been here before.

Ocean Park ticket admission price: $350HKD (to buy in advance from any 7-11 and avoid the queue at the entrance)
Getting there: Bus 629 ($10HKD) from  Admiralty (West) Bus Terminal (Admiralty MTR)
Opening hours: 10:30AM to 7:30PM

Tian Tan Buddha

This is really near the airport so instead of making a separate trip here, we decided to head over directly from the airport. Thankfully we didn't have any bulky or heavy luggages so this was actually quite easy and convenient. Do note that the stairs up to the buddha only opens at a certain time and I remember reaching there pretty early in the morning and just walking around the empty village for a bit. The temple puppies are absolutely adorable so you can probably easily while your time away with them.

From the airport: Bus S1 to Tung Chung Station
There are luggage storage facilities at the NP360 Tung Chung Terminus with a charge of HK$20 for each three hours or HK$70 for a day.
From Tung Chung: Bus 23 to Ngong Ping village and Giant Buddha

2d1n in Shen Zhen

Crossing the border to China was a breeze. If I lived in Hong Kong, I'd probably go over every weekend. The food was alright but the shopping! Don't be afraid to bargain over here, sure some of them can be a little rude but most of them usually would entertain you as long as you're not trying to low ball them. We did gelish manicures for about $15 sgd and my eyelash extensions were only $20 sgd!

From the airport: Bus A43 > Sheung Shui bus stop $31HKD (1hr ride)
Walk to Sheung Shui MTR > Lo Wu Station (one stop!) $20HKD
From anywhere else: just make your way to Lo Wu Station and you're well on your way to shopping heaven.

That's pretty much it for my Hong Kong travel guide. Feel free to ask any questions regarding my trip and if you have any specific place you'd like a guide for - just let me know!
